Compulsive social media or smartphone use

How does your phone use affect you? Do you find it hard when you are unable to check your phone? Can a train journey, waiting in a queue or do times when you can’t connect to the internet feel intolerable?

 

Do you think too much about what to write or which pictures to post for a ‘status update’, 'story' or how to respond to a tweet or comment? Do you feel a very strong, perhaps exaggerated feeling of anger or insult after online interactions (often with strangers) on Twitter or Facebook?

 

Do you feel a positive boost from the amount of ‘like’s or comments a post receives, waiting and looking forward to checking these? Anticipating responses from social media or even text messages has been compared to the feeling gamblers expect when using a slot machine. The recognition or that feeling of ‘connectedness’ social media gives, can indeed be like a mini high. Looking forward to that positive interaction, be it a text or a ‘like’, creates a slightly nervous state. Not getting it or spending too long online can leave you feeling drained and down. This feeling is similar to withdrawal symptoms felt from other addictive patterns.

 

Do you sometimes engage in unhealthy patterns around smartphone use, gaming or social media? Are your real life interpersonal relationships being affected? Are you using gaming or social media to avoid forming meaningful real life relationships?

 

My approach is to view you as whole, capable and fully able to make choices. As such we will work together, helping you to deal well with thoughts and desires and reduce your feelings of dependence on gaming, your phone or social media. 

 

There can be a great deal of shame associated with any addiction. Depending on your circumstances, your phone usage may involve some shame and therefore you may keep much of it a secret. It can feel a big enough deal to admit to yourself that something needs to change. I listen and support. I never judge anything you have done or anything you might say. Sessions are confidential.

Changing your relationship with technology and social media

The main work we will do together is examining your relationship with technology, gaming and social media. What is the role your phone usage has begun to play in your life? How do you use it? Do you use it to ‘self-soothe’, to escape, or to deal with stress and anxiety? 

 

Do you feel more confident, important or more in control when engaged with your phone or social media? We will look at the underlying reasons for your patterns. Importantly, we will work to change them.

Living life fully and confidently

Phones and social media are a part of life. However you will be able to impose good and clear boundaries on your usage. This is something we will look at. Gaming or phone usage can be to avoid stress or deal with anxiety, relationships or social situations.  It is time to find alternative ways to deal with life’s ups and downs. It is also important to consider other ways to relax and ways to nurture your well-being.

 

Gaming or social media can be used to avoid addressing and working towards those things you truly want out of life. Parallel to reducing usage of technology, I will support you, if needed, to re-discover confidence and remind yourself of all those goals you once wanted and those gifts you have to give to the world around you.

 

Moving from dependency or addiction will signal for you a movement in a positive and optimistic direction. I hope my hypnosis sessions will help you made those changes you would like to see.

I never imagined that I would ever be able to say this, but thank you so much Jason for helping me to feel more comfortable with flying. I have just returned from my trip to Dubai and to my complete surprise, I was noticeably calmer in the time leading up to the flight and managed bouts of turbulence really well. In the past, very mild turbulence would send me into a complete frenzy. I kept waiting for that sinking feeling in my stomach, the sweaty palms and the tears, but it didn't come. Although I was still very aware of my surroundings and the noises on the flight, I did not feel the same panic or alarm as I usually would; instead, it was more a curiosity in what was happening. I was able to eat, watch a film (put headphones on!!!) and sleep, things I could only dream of doing before. Thank you for making the world a whole lot bigger for me - Japan next!!! 🙂

I found my sessions with Jason very useful and he helped me understand the connections between triggers and the negative behaviours I was keen to cut out.Through the hypnotherapy I believe I have been able to create more negative connotations with these behaviours which have led me to avoid situations and triggers which could lead to relapsing into these negative behaviours.Jason is very reassuring and helpful and I felt comfortable during our sessions and I would recommend him if you are trying to break or change some of your addictive behaviours.

I had fear of heights. It is really not that easy to cure and to get rid of. I thought about hypnosis and after 3 sessions it is gone! I'm in mountains now and where previously I was unable to walk - I don't feel any negative emotions now! So it worked for me!

I have smoked and then vaped for 20 years. Fighting the cravings has always been the hardest part of successfully quitting permanently.Jason is professional and calm. We talked through all the reasons why I was smoking/vaping, and actually going through this made me realise some things I had never actually thought about. It wasn't nicotine. It was other things! Then, hypnotherapy was a highly recommended experience that changes your mindset. I left the session and have not had the desire to vape since! Anyone who is wants to stop vaping / smoking - go do this. I have already recommended Jason to other friends - he was great!

I went to Jason for around 6 months to get help with some issues I was looking to overcome.We actually didn't do any hypnotherapy as I wasn't sure how comfortable I felt, and Jason assured me we didn't have to; however, if I were to do it again I'd certainly like to give it a try.The sessions helped me enormously and I learnt a lot about myself and the reasons as to why I do certain things. I had a couple of sessions with Jason for a severe fear of heights. After just a few days after the first session I was able to climb up ladders/walk along scaffolding without any concern whatsoever. I am yet to try larger challenges but I can tell already that the sessions have significantly helped me!
