How do I help you reduce Mobile Phone and Social Media Addiction ?
Successful long term reduction of compulsive use of technology is a process of change, involving a number of steps.
How does your phone use affect you?
Do you find it hard when you are unable to check your phone? Can a train journey, waiting in a queue or when you can’t connect to the internet feel intolerable?
Do you spend too much time looking things up online or checking social media platforms? Following this, do you feel a little down, tired and despondent?
Do you think too much about what to write for a ‘status update’ or how to respond to a tweet or comment? Do you feel a very strong, perhaps exaggerated feeling of anger or insult after online interactions (often with strangers) on Twitter or Facebook?
Do you feel a positive boost from the amount of ‘like’s or comments a post receives, waiting and looking forward to checking these or similar? Anticipating responses from social media or even texts, has been compared to the feelings gamblers receive or expect when using a slot machine. The recognition or that feeling of ‘connectedness’ social media gives, can indeed be like a mini high. Looking forward to that positive interaction, be that a text or ‘like’ creates a slightly nervous state. Not getting it or spending too long online can leave you feeling drained and down. This feeling is similar to withdrawal symptoms felt from other addictive patterns.

My approach is to view you as whole, capable and fully able to make choices. As such we will work together, helping you to deal well with thoughts and desires and reduce your feelings of dependence on gaming, your phone or social media.
There can be a great deal of shame associated with any addiction. Depending on your circumstances, your phone usage may involve some shame and therefore you may keep much of it a secret. It can feel a big enough deal to admit to yourself that something needs to change. So, then often ‘confessing’ also to a partner or loved sounds like something simply too big to do.
I listen and support. I never judge anything you have done or anything you might say. Sessions are confidential.
The main work we will do together is examining your relationship with technology, gaming and social media. What is the role your phone usage has begun to play in your life? How do you use it? Do you use it to ‘self-soothe’, to escape, or to deal with stress and anxiety? Do you feel more confident, important or more in control when engaged with your phone or social media?
We will look at the underlying reasons for your patterns. You may find that the underlying issues also really need to be addressed.
For example, has phone use begun to function as your way of avoiding important life issues or relationships? Do you ever use the internet, gaming or social media to numb yourself or suppress emotions and feelings that are uncomfortable?
We will find new ways for you to do well with challenges and thereby reduce the role and significance of your phone, social media or gaming in your life.
Phones and social media are a part of life. However you will be able to impose good and clear boundaries on your usage. This is normally something we will look at. However when you use gaming or phone usage to avoid stress or deal with anxiety or social situations or to actually avoid aspects of life, such as relationships, you may need to consider what can be changed.
It is time to find alternative ways to deal with life’s ups and downs. It is also important to consider other ways to relax and nurture your well-being.
Gaming or social media can be used to avoid addressing and working towards those things you truly want out of life. Parallel to reducing usage of technology, I will support you, if needed, to re-discover confidence and remind yourself of all those goals you once wanted and those gifts you have to give to the world around you.
Moving from dependency or addiction will signal for you a movement in a positive and optimistic direction.
