Trauma hypnotherapy in London

Feeling fear when confronted with a potentially dangerous situation is a normal reaction. We actually need this fear for our survival. It creates reactions in the body which aim to save our life if threatened. This ‘fight or flight’ response is normal and natural and works to protect us.

When faced with a traumatic situation, most people will experience a number of reactions and may recover a short while after the event. For some people, however, these symptoms keep reoccurring. You may feel frightened, stressed, have flashbacks or experience nightmares long after the event has ended. It’s when these symptoms last longer than a month, do not fade over time, or begin to affect your everyday life, it can be a sign of PTSD and that you might need help and support. Alongside other forms of therapy, hypnotherapy for trauma can help reduce anxiety and panic.

Hypnotherapy for emotional and psychological trauma

What is emotional and psychological trauma? Trauma is really measured on our own personal scale. It is not for someone else to tell you weren’t traumatised, for example. Ideally we will process traumatic events as they occur. However, often the case will be that we respond to events with an unhealthy coping mechanism. In a sense this is very normal and nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about. However you reacted at the time was totally fine. For example, we might turn to alcohol or substance abuse as a way of escaping our thoughts and feelings.

Dissociation can also be a way to escape from what is happening too. Our mind takes us away to another place, possibly one that our imagination concocts, somewhere these events are not happening and we can feel be safe.

If you are struggling to overcome a traumatic event, trauma hypnotherapy may be the solution you have been looking for. If you are looking for a trauma therapist in London, get in touch today.

When we do experience traumatic events, it is very common also to repress or suppress the trauma until a time when we can deal with it. The difference between repression and suppression is that repression is the involuntary act of our subconscious mind of burying how we feel to protect ourselves, whereas suppression is the voluntary act of doing this. For example, we may keep busy at work, so that we actively avoid thinking about the events that occurred. That we do this, makes it no surprise that then the prospect od talking about the trauma might feel daunting.

These coping mechanisms aren’t in themselves an unhealthy and at the time can help a person cope with something that feels simply too overwhelming. We might not be in a position to deal with the trauma there and then. We can, in fact, be so effective at burying our thoughts and feelings that sometimes our subconscious mind will block the memory of the event from our conscious thoughts entirely. Afterall, if we can’t even remember it, how can it be causing us harm? And surely, it would cause us unnecessary distress to open up old wounds, so to speak.

Yet it is still there and as a trauma therapist will often help people who are now suffering from panic attacks, anxiety, or flashbacks. They will even say that they think they have moved on and left it all in the past, yet their anxiety symptoms demonstrate that really the trauma was not fully processed and is ‘bubbling up’. As such hypnotherapy for trauma can help reduce those trauma caused symptoms such as issues sleeping, low self-esteem, and addictions.

Trauma hypnotherapy therapist for PTSD in London

As a trauma hypnotherapy therapist in London, it is important that the client is provided with a safe place both in the consulting room, but also within themselves. Hypnotherapy can equip you with whatever tools your imagination can summon up to deal with the events. This may be by arming you with a protective shield or bubble so that you can feel safe and know that nobody can harm you now. Frequently, in a safe way, we will revisit painful memories removing the emotional ‘sting’ from them. Importantly we look at how events may have altered how you view yourself and your capabilities or even self-worth. As a trauma therapist I enjoy seeing people feeling confident and ‘whole’ again.

Hypnotherapy for trauma London sessions can provide an effective treatment option to address PTSD. By managing the events in this way, your subconscious mind can feel safe and protected, often speeding up the time it takes to recover. So, if you are struggling to overcome a traumatic event, hypnotherapy may be the solution you have been looking for. If you are looking for a trauma hypnotherapy  in London, get in touch now.
