Fear of Blood Phobia Help
How does this phobia affect you? Many people feel faint or high anxiety when faced with blood or the prospect of seeing blood. This might be in real life or on TV or in a movie. Sometimes people will avoid having medical tests because they are worried about how they will feel. I am frequently contacted by people who will need to have medical examinations. For example, I had a client recently who had become pregnant. She feared having standard tests during her pregnancy. She also worried about her birth and even worried about seeing blood during tests for her young child, in the future.
Why do we develop a fear of blood phobia?
If you think about it, it is quite logical to have this fear. Blood represents pain and possible injury. Many people develop a deep fear of blood from an experience during childhood. For example, if you witnessed an accident, you may now have this phobia form this traumatic incident. Sometimes it will be resultant from the reaction of adults, when you or someone else was unwell.
When others are fearful or react with anxiety that can create in us, especially as children, a mirrored high anxiety about accidents, pain or bleeding. With many clients that I see for a fear of blood phobia, we need to go back to these difficult or painful memories, in order to resolve their fear of blood phobia.
Why does hypnotherapy help with this phobia?
Phobias aren’t something you can be talked out of. Phobias really live in your subconscious. Your subconscious is that part of the mind where memories, feelings and unconscious drives live. It is your unconscious that is taking care of your bodily functions also. So, for example your subconscious regulates your breathing, heart rate, and the other systems of the body. It is also in the unconscious or subconscious that we store memories and instinctual reactions such as phobias.
Hypnotherapy is an ideal treatment for a ear of blood phobia since it works with the unconscious or subconscious mind. Using visualisations and other tools, I help people reprogram, or rather rethink about how they feel, about blood or medical interventions.
Client story
Recently Simon (name changed) came because he needed help with his regular diabetes thumb prick test. He regularly tested his insulin and sugar levels and had developed a fear of blood and also needles. This also meant that he was fearful of going to hospital for medical tests which he needed for his diabetes. He dreaded his yearly checkup.
After three sessions, Simon was feeling much more comfortable. He was able to carry out the thumb prick test on himself without any anxiety or stress. A year later, Simon came for a top up session. This enabled him to have his yearly examinations with more ease. Simon did not get in contact again as he felt happy and comfortable now, without further help needed.
He explained: “Sessions with Jason really changed everything around. I feel calmer and more at ease. I can’t believe the change.”
Hypnosis tips for fear of blood phobia.
I would like to share with you a few ideas that could help you feel calm and relaxed. About this phobia.
- Practise mindfulness. Mindfulness meditation is a great way to feel more present and calmer about anxieties and stresses. Often mindfulness is about meditation, focusing on the breath, in particular. Mindfulness also helps you feel more present with what you are experiencing and feeling. Though its aim is not truly about stress release, a secondary benefit of mindfulness is feeling calmer. Being able to practise mindfulness when heading into a stressful situation could be very helpful for you.
- Use your imagination. Something I practise with clients is imagining feeling calm and relaxed. For example, if you know you will have a blood test, your imagination is a useful tool. So, as well as looking away, move your mind and thoughts to a calming, relaxing image or memory. For example, imagine yourself resting on a wonderful relaxing beach or in some beautiful countryside. When you imagine calming, relaxing scenes in your imagination, your body responds. So, when you do this you relax and your nervous system relaxes too.
- Remember it only takes two minutes. In other words, though it may seem like a big deal, an injection really is very brief and it will be over very quickly. Remember that and think of the bigger picture about how having good health and knowing the test results will be very positive for your well-being and future health. I know it’s easy for me to say that, but if you are able to tolerate the uncomfortable feelings for just a minute or two, it will be over and done with.
- Seek help for your phobia. Yes, hypnotherapy is a wonderful way to treat phobias. However, if it does result from something very traumatic, you may also gain from other therapies such as CBT or talking therapy. If there was something traumatic or difficult, especially, in your childhood or recent history consider a wider approach.
