What is atelophobia?
Atelophobia is really a fear about not being good enough. Have you ever had that feeling of being a failure or that you don’t have the skills or abilities to cope in a situation? Atelophobia can also show up as feelings of low self-esteem or comparing yourself to others. You can experience feelings of anxiety, depression and stress. Very often work performance can suffer, especially when you compare yourself to others.
Why do people develop atelophobia?
Generally speaking, this phobia will result from childhood experiences. Atelophobia often results from pressures as a child to perform academically or ‘be good’. It can also come from parents comparing one sibling to another. So, you don’t necessarily have to experience childhood trauma to develop these feelings of low self-esteem. It is, in fact, very common in children of more affluent parents.
Atelophobia can show up in later life for outwardly successful people. When one has parents who were emotionally neglectful, children can often then gain feelings of poor self-esteem. For example, a child may grow up believing that they must be academically successful or well behaved or overly polite in order for patents to like them and approve of them. They grow up to be ‘people pleasers’, concerned if people like them for who they truly are.
If during childhood parents were busy or absent, this can affect self-esteem as well. When parents have very high standards, a child always questions if they are indeed good enough or measure up. So, it is very common for people with atelophobia to initially say their childhoods were fun and carefree. Not wishing to admit to themselves that parents may have not have been as kind or emotionally available as they would have wished. Yet, maybe somewhere, on deeper, on reflection sometimes there can be painfully experiences of emotional neglect, disappointment or even anger.
It’s not always about trauma
Yes, trauma in childhood can result in poor self-esteem and difficulties in later life. However, normal sibling rivalries and the need to pass exams will all also affect how a child feels about themselves. Then fast forward to later life and work pressures feel stronger for somebody who often may wonder if they are good enough.
Do you ever wonder if you are good enough at your job or if people like you? Do you sometimes feel that you have to be perfect or be 100%? Ever feel you must put more effort into your work than you need to or stay at the office later than you have to? Ever check emails on holiday or at weekends, just in case?
It can be very tiring when you are always putting in more effort than needed. Especially when it is difficult to relax, when always alert to imperfections or you worry about what people think about you.
How hypnotherapy can reduce atelophobia
Atelophobia is really about unconscious beliefs that you have about yourself and the world around you. These are beliefs, in particular, about your value as a person and your abilities or responsibilities to others. When we question our abilities or compare ourselves to other people, we often may conclude that, on some level, we are not good enough. This false conclusion may result in anxiety and stress and working harder than we really need to.
Hypnotherapy can really look at these unconscious beliefs. During sessions with people at my London office, we look at childhood experiences and how your beliefs are running in the present. It’s not that you necessarily needed to have strong traumatic experiences. A happy childhood can also mean that atelophobia can show up later in life. All sorts of experiences or adult events can reduce self-esteem and create this phobia too.
Since hypnotherapy looks at unconscious beliefs, we are then more able to changing how to really feel. We can look at these beliefs and thoughts, and, in a sense, we reprogram how you think and feel. To help people with this phobia, usually more than just hypnotherapy is required. Frequently we will look at childhood experiences and do the work needed to change how those memories affect you in the present day.
What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is really about looking at unconscious thoughts and feelings. In a practical sense hypnotherapy is about asking you to close your eyes and guiding you into a relaxing trance. In a hypnotherapy trance, you are able to hear what is going on and can always open your eyes at any time. You are always in control and have the freedom to listen or not listen or follow or not follow what is suggested. For atelophobia, hypnotherapy can often focus on memories and feelings from childhood. During hypnotherapy, we look at these memories in order to change how you feel and think and respond in the present day.
Would you like to reduce atelophobia?
If you would like to reduce atelophobia, hypnotherapy can help you. I see people at my office in London and also online. Hypnotherapy for phobias can be very effective in just a few sessions. However, when it comes to perfectionism and feeling not good enough, a few extra sessions may be very beneficial.
