I already knew from an early age that my career would be about supporting and helping others, both adults and children. Initially my career started teaching children and teenagers, which included teaching children with special needs. I also mentored teenagers and took counselling training and counselled university age students for personal and emotional issues. This work I loved and I felt enormous fulfilment from helping children and teenagers with issues which, at times, were traumatic and shocking. I then studied life coaching and Neuro-linguistic programming. Hypnotherapy studies soon followed and I have enjoyed seeing my clients make changes, which many initially hadn’t dreamt possible.
Increasing my knowledge and gaining extra skills is very important to me and I regularly attend training workshops and take additional professional courses.
Clinical hypnotherapy is a very powerful tool but is not a magic wand. I only work with clients, whether adults or children, who will benefit and are committed to making positive changes. When you take me on as your therapist I work very hard for you. For long lasting results, each client is expected to work daily towards their goals as well.
Sessions are enjoyable and relaxed. I am known for my calming manner and a no-nonsense coaching style which will challenge you. Each client’s needs and goals are always central and I will do my best to explain everything and answer all questions you have. I consider no question to be too small to answer. All sessions are private and confidential. I have a full DBS check for work with children.
Hypnotherapy is a highly effective therapy which aims to help you change habits and outlook in a relatively short period of time. We will discuss your challenges, the changes you wish to make and the challenges you may be facing. Following this, you will close your eyes and be guided into a deeper feeling of relaxation, similar to daydreaming or focused concentration. I will then speak with your subconscious mind, often by using specific visualisations or by speaking directly to you in a way which communicates directly with your imagination and subconscious mind, bringing change at a deeper level. You will be in complete control and hear what is being said. You will be able to speak and open your eyes at any time should you need to do so. Hypnotherapy is an enjoyable experience and you will leave sessions feeling relaxed and positive.
If you have ever seen a stage hypnotist, you may be concerned that during clinical hypnotherapy you may be put in a trance and manipulated to do things you would be unhappy about. TV shows are about entertainment and clinical hypnotherapy works very differently. During your session you will have total control and be able to hear what I say and able to open your eyes should you need to do so. Indeed sometimes you will be required to talk whilst in a trance. It is important to mention also that I am in fact unable to say or suggest something to you, to which you would ordinarily disagree. Clinical hypnotherapy is about helping you make the positive changes you really want to see.
Clinical hypnotherapy has high success rates. However as an experienced therapist it would be foolish and arrogant for me to guarantee results, since each client has unique needs and challenges. My success rates are high because I only work with motivated clients, who understand that for lasting results, they too must put work in as well. I work very hard to help you, but real success is also about you, the client, making a commitment to actually making changes. To help ensure positive changes happen, I will ask you to carry out assignments between sessions and will often be in contact by email as well. Home assignments are essential for success and I have indeed sometimes put sessions on pause when a client did not carry out assignments. As well as clinical hypnotherapy, I also use NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming), life coaching and techniques from CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy). You will find that this more rounded approach will bring you greater benefits.
Of course I would love to work with you, but it is far more important to me that you really get the results you want. If I feel that I am not the most suitable therapist for you, I will always suggest alternative treatments or therapies which I feel would be more effective for you.
If you have ever daydreamed, got lost in concentration and have a desire to be hypnotised, you should be able to enter, at least, a light level of hypnosis. I have found that sometimes it is harder for a client to enter trance if they have a bit of an obsessively analytical mind or sometimes find it hard to trust others. During their first experience of hypnosis, it is very normal for clients to be a little concerned about what will happen and it sometimes can take a bit longer to go into a trance during your first session. I do my best to explain what hypnosis is and answer all your questions, so that you feel comfortable and at ease. If you feel that you may be resistant, let me know so I am aware of this.
Our minds are much more powerful than we often realise. Your mind has two parts, your conscious mind (around 10%) and your subconscious mind (around 90%). You use your conscious mind to think, read and communicate in a ‘conscious’ thought out manner. Your subconscious mind is responsible for your automatic habits, desires, and for storing memories and beliefs about yourself and the world around you.
We use our subconscious mind a great deal more than we often realise. This means that it is vital to ensure your subconscious is working at its optimum level, so you feel happy and confident and your subconscious is focusing on the positives about your life and not stuck dwelling on negative thoughts such as past failures, regrets or fears about the future.
Whenever we come across any information, people or experiences, our subconscious is always the first part of our mind to respond to whatever is happening. Just think about something that might occasionally worry you. For some it’s a spider, for others it’s confronting colleagues or having to speak in public. That feeling of nervousness which you begin to experience wasn’t produced by your conscious mind but rather by your subconscious mind. Somewhere your subconscious ‘made up its mind’, as it were, about who you are and how you will do in that situation.
Your conscious mind, on the other hand, might be saying something else, for example that, ‘it’s no big deal’ or that ‘you will be fine’. However it is hard to listen to your conscious mind when your subconscious is so much more persistent. In fact since so much is determined on the subconscious level, it is often on a subconscious level that change needs to happen. You need to go directly to the subconscious to make the subconscious change. This is where hypnotherapy helps. By talking directly to your subconscious you can reduce those nervous feelings, something your conscious mind will find hard to achieve.
Another example of a challenge I often help clients with, is overeating. On a conscious level a person often knows that eating too much cake or chocolate is unhealthy and will result in weight gain. However it is really the subconscious mind which is driving the desire to eat too much unhealthy food. Talking ‘consciously’ will only go so far since every client agrees on a conscious level that it’s unhelpful to overeat. However it is only when we go to the source of the habit on the subconscious level that change will actually happen. Once the subconscious begins to view chocolate, cake or whatever the food is, in a different way, then the desire to eat it when feeling stressed, will be reduced substantially. In other words hypnotherapy can help retrain your subconscious mind so it’s working for your success.

For weight reduction, client commitment and positive action are essential for success. I will give you powerful tools and support but it is ultimately up to you, the client, to decide what and how much, in reality, you will eat and if you will increase your level of exercise. I therefore ask clients to initially book six or eight sessions, though I do not always insist that all sessions be paid for upfront.

My smoking cessation programme is for two sessions and I highly recommend a third session to ensure you have all you require to stay quit. Many hypnotherapists will claim to ‘cure’ your smoking in one session. I am sure that many are successful, however I am more interested in you quitting effectively and it sticking long term than making gimmicky claims about how fast I can turn you into a non-smoker. If you smoke a lot or have been smoking for a few years, smoking may act for you as a crutch to use when stressed or when feeling under pressure in some way. I would like you to be prepared and confident before kicking that crutch away. Doing this too soon or too quickly may result in you returning to smoking. This can happen if we have not dealt adequately with the reasons why you smoked in the first place. I will support you between sessions as well, so you feel confident about overcoming withdrawal and cravings.
Your first session is approximately 90 minutes in length. During this session we discuss your habit in detail, coping strategies and the role smoking has played for you over the years. Your second session is your quit session and I recommend a third session to ensure you are happy and coping well with life without nicotine. I will also be in touch by email or phone to support you through this time of transition to becoming a non-smoker.

For all other challenges, such as stress, panic attacks, insomnia, ADHD symptoms, nail biting or teeth grinding, confidence, public speaking and career direction, there are indeed some challenges which can be reduced significantly with just a couple of sessions. Long term results are improved by repetition and most importantly by dealing well with the underlying reasons why the problem, habit or phobia, is there in the first place. Clients are usually asked to book a block of four or six sessions, though I do not always insist that all sessions be paid for upfront.

Yes it is very safe. In fact, when you think about it you are often in a trance on a daily basis. Just think of times you have been sleepy but not quite asleep yet, engrossed in focused concentration, been preoccupied daydreaming or found your mind wandering during a conversation or class. These are all examples of being in a type of trance. The difference is that you were not guided into the trance by a therapist. Hypnotherapy is safe and suitable for both adults and children. I always strongly recommend that you are alert before coming for your session. This means having had a good night’s sleep the previous evening. Also, as much as it is possible for you to do so, it is advisable to allow also an extra few minutes after your hypnotherapy session before your next appointment. This will ensure your mind is not preoccupied during your session, thinking about what will happen later. It is also not recommended to consume alcohol or use recreation drugs before your session. Hypnotherapy is not recommended for some suffers of psychotic disorders or epilepsy. If you are at all in doubt, please ask me or ask your doctor to clarify.
