Case Studies

Fear of Flying and Nightmares

Malcolm was suffering from anxiety and was visibly nervous when he came to see me. He was having nightmares and was very anxious about flying. He had been on a flight during which one of the engines caught fire and the plane had nose dived for a few seconds before the pilot regained control and landed the plane safely. Malcolm, though normally very confident and in control, was now feeling panicky whilst on public transport and was very fearful of travelling by plane again. During our sessions, Malcolm was able to reduce his overall level of stress and anxiety. We then looked directly at his traumatic experience. After three sessions Malcolm felt that he had returned to his previous normal level of calm. After two further sessions, he felt confident about flying again.

Fear of Escalators and Heights

Matthew was under a great deal of stress and felt anxiety due to moving house and jobs and was finding it hard to cope. He had never had a problem with escalators before, however with so much stress, he suddenly found that he was having anxious thoughts about getting onto escalators on the London underground.  One day, after a particularly stressful meeting in London’s West End, he found that he was unable to go down the escalator at Piccadilly Circus station due to panicky feelings. This inability to use the escalator added to his feelings of anxiety.

Matthew visited his GP who suggested some anti anxiety drugs. Concerned about the addictive nature of the drugs, Matthew came to see if Hypnotherapy would help him with his escalator phobia. Hypnotherapy helped Matthew reduce stress in general and also his anxiety around escalators. After one session Matthew was able to go on the escalators in a nearby department store and within a few days, though still slightly anxious, was able to use the escalators on the London underground again. With continued exposure to heights and escalators, Matthew was again able use escalators and normal life patterns were back in place.

Smoking

Rachel, 28, had been a heavy smoker as a teenager. She had quit smoking for several years but a couple of years ago had gradually picked it up again. Every few months she would buy some nicotine replacement lozenges or try to quit cold turkey, but the quitting never seemed to stick.

Rachel had two hypnotherapy sessions. She looked at the reasons why she smoked, the trigger situations in which she often felt an urge to smoke and what was going on in her life at the moment and how that all affected her habit. I helped Rachel plan strategies to use when in trigger smoking situations or when she felt a craving and how to cope with common withdrawal symptoms.

Through hypnotherapy, Rachel began to break her attachment to smoking and agreed to cut down her smoking over the following days, so she would feel happy and confident to quit at her next session.

 

During her second session, Rachel began to view herself and smoking differently. She began to see herself as a non-smoker and felt motivated and happy to begin a new phase of her life. By the time Rachel had left the office, she knew she would never smoke again.

After her first session, Rachel reported that her cravings had begun to feel different. She became much more aware of the stress associated with nicotine cravings and although she had agreed to now smoke less, she knew her smoking days were numbered and was happy to stub out cigarettes before finishing them. After her second session, Rachel gave away her remaining cigarettes. Although she still had physical cravings, she felt strong enough to not give in. Even if someone had given her a cigarette, she would not have been tempted to smoke it. Rachel also noticed that as a result of hypnotherapy, she felt greater clarity about some other issues that had been on her mind. Currently, over six months later, Rachel is still doing well and is neither smoking nor replacing the cigarette gap with another addiction.

Rachel had the option of a third session if needed and I was in regular contact during her quitting process to see how she was doing and coping as non-smoker.

Feeling Greater Control Around Food

Before starting her sessions,  Angela, aged 45, felt that a great deal of time and emotional energy was taken up with thoughts and anxieties about food, her weight and her body. This had been a challenge since her teenage years.

Through NLP, I helped Angela identify some of the underlying causes of these anxieties and some of her unhelpful behaviours and thought patterns. She also developed new and easy to use strategies and behaviours to replace them. After having a number of sessions of hypnotherapy, Angela reported that she felt that the new behaviours and strategies had become a natural part of her daily life and was able to use them effortlessly.

Angela reported that she felt more relaxed about her eating. She felt free of her previous anxiety about food and she felt that she could now actually enjoy food without constantly having a conversation in her head about weight gain.

After having a series of sessions, Angela began to lose weight without feeling that she had to deprive herself. She also felt better and more accepting of her body. She came initially with the goal of losing weight, however at the end of her sessions, Angela reported that the benefits had been a lot broader. She felt that now that she was no longer having all the unnecessary conversations in her head about food and weight, she actually had a lot more space and mental energy available to put into enhancing other areas of her life.

    Jason, You have been very helpful. Changing negative habits for positive ones is really the key. The meditation exercises were great. But the most effective thing is to have someone to talk to.
